Dutch side PEC Zwolle's appeal to the International Football Assocation Board (IFAB) over a controversial disallowed goal has been dismissed.

  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Nick Fichtinger looked to have scored a late winner for Zwolle following a corner kick against RKC Waalwijk on December 20 but VAR intervened to rule it out for offside. After not getting the 2-1 win, with the match going down as a 1-1 draw, the Eredivisie outfit appealed to IFAB as the club said this was 'In violation of the rules of the game, by both the VAR, AVAR and referees on the field'.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  According to the laws of the game, a player cannot be offside if they receive the ball directly from a goal kick, throw-in, or corner kick. Therefore, Zwolle's goal should have stood. Johnny Jansen's team requested to continue playing the game if the score was 2-1 in their favour but that proposal was ignored. Now, Zwolle say they have been unsuccessful with their appeal following a consultation with IFAB and the Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

• WHAT PEC ZWOLLE SAID

  A club statement reads: "To our great surprise, the KNVB, after consultation with the IFAB, maintains its decision not to approve the goal. The KNVB states that the referee applied the rules correctly, and that only an incorrect assessment was made. Although this decision is at odds with what KNVB officials have indicated, as a club we unfortunately see no serious possibility of successfully challenging this decision by the KNVB (elsewhere) and as a club we will have to accept this."

  Zwolle, who sit 13th in the league, will look to bounce back from this disappointment when they travel to Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
